Welcome back!!

Well, it's that time of year again! BACK TO SCHOOL! This year is very exciting for me-I've got lots of fresh ideas, we are implementing 1:1 technology, and oh yeah, I have a new name!! :) I married my wonderful husband in April, and I'm still getting used to hearing "Mrs. Wagner," but I'm sure after a week or two of hearing it several hundred times from the kiddos it will sink in ;) 

With that comes a new blog, Waggish Wonderart http://waggishartroom.blogspot.com/ and a new twitter handle as well https://twitter.com/waggishartroom

I've got bulletin boards going up, art supply orders getting unpacked, and files getting...organized (ahem, stacked in stacks ;) Lots to do, and one week until we officially start, but we will get there! I'll be updating this blog as things progress, and as much as possible during the school year. Looking forward to a fun filled year of art!

Another year, another successful Dot Day!

Dean Street celebrated Dot Day! Students and teachers wore dot clothing and "connected the dots" of art, reading, writing, math, music, and other subjects to create some awesome projects! Here are some pictures of our all-school collaboration!

Welcome Back!!

Welcome back to another great year!

It's the second week of school, and art is in full swing! In order to create our art we need a cool place to do it in :) So here's a before and some after pics of the art room:

Here's what students are working on:

Kinder: We read the book "Mix It Up!" and had fun learning the primary colors and mixing them up! Students will be making frogs next.

First: We discussed different types of lines and painted the big 6 (straight, wavy, dotted, dashed, zig zag, and bumpy) on our paper. Our next project will be creating fish and reading the book "Only One You."

Second: We read the book "The Day the Crayons Quit" and drew our own crayons! Students will be creating birds next.

Third: Students read the book "Beautiful Oops!" They made an "oops" on their paper and then turned it in to something beautiful. For their next project, students will be learning about Georgia O'Keeffe and creating close up flowers.

Fourth: Students created sketchbooks and practiced drawing 3-D forms. They are going to be learning about the artist Wayne Thiebaud and making a 3-D sweet.

Fifth: Students created sketchbooks and practiced drawing mannequins. For their next project they are creating an expressive self-portrait inspired by Edvard Munch's "The Scream."

DOT DAY!

Students celebrated International Dot Day the week of September 15th! International Dot Day is a global celebration of creativity, courage, and collaboration. Students were read The Dot by Peter H. Reynolds and then created dot inspired artwork!! Every grade created a different dot project. It was so inspiring to see their creativity flourish! Here are some photos of the bulletin boards created for dot day:

And here are some of the projects that students created:

First Grade: Students painted primary and secondary colored dots on their paper with watercolor paint, and then did printmaking on top of their paintings by dipping a cardboard tube into black paint and printing circles!

Second Grade: Students created a dot on their paper using negative space. They left a white circle (negative space) on their paper and then painted around the circle with abstract or realistic watercolor paintings! Students also painted paper plates and created circle loom weavings inspired by this post from Cassie Stephens: http://cassiestephens.blogspot.com/2014/04/in-art-room-circle-loom-weaving-with.html

            

Third Grade: Students were introduced to the artist Kandinsky and created layered concentric paper circles which they glued on their paper. Then they added dots and circles on top with oil pastel and then painted more circles and dots on top with watercolors!

 

Fourth Grade: Students created Impressionist paintings inspired by the art of Georges Seurat. Students created a painting of their choice using qtips to paint with. Their dotty masterpieces turned out great!

 
 

Fifth Grade: Students learned about the art of Aboriginal Dot Painting from Australia. They created their very own unique dot painting in the Aboriginal style using neutral colors and q-tips to create the dots!
